Rainy Day History - a MOHAI teen-produced podcast!
One of my favorite parts of my job is running the MOHAI Youth Advisors (MYA) program, which brings together a group of high school students to work closely with museum staff and guide the museum in what teens want and need. Every year they do a large project together. This past year they wanted to do something really different, and envisioned a project that would be long-lasting, easy to access, and allowed them to do history together. They wanted to make… a podcast.
And they did! Rainy Day History is a super rad piece of public history in that it was entirely envisioned, researched, written, and produced by the teens themselves. They’ve put together a truly enjoyable season of six episodes on Seattle history.
Each episode uses an object on display in the MOHAI galleries to tell a larger story about what it means to be a Seattleite, past and present. We’re about halfway through releasing the episodes - you can catch them on pretty much any platform, including Spotify, iTunes, and Stitcher.
I’m super proud of their work, and of my own, on this project! I think it’s fair to say none of us really knew what we were getting into, nor were any of us experts at podcasting. I loved getting to learn alongside them and stretch my creative and narrative skills at work in ways I rarely get to do. Please take a listen, share, and enjoy!
